Fetal surgery

Fetal surgery

is a medical technique that makes it possible to treat certain serious diseases or malformations of the unborn child in the womb by using special equipment. This makes it possible to treat in the womb especially those diseases which, if left untreated, would lead to the death of the child during or after pregnancy or to serious health damage.

Premature rupture of the membranes in an early week of pregnancy can also be treated by means of continuous amniotic fluid infusion via a very thin catheter inserted through the abdominal wall if certain conditions are met. This makes it possible to prolong the pregnancy for weeks or months until the child has reached sufficient maturity for birth.
